ZAMBIA

Zambia must hope that a series of disastrous dress rehearsals will lead to a good opening night against holders Egypt. Preparations began last October with a 2-1 loss in Tunisia and continued with a humiliating 7-1 defeat by Honduras. Results did not improve this month with the Zimbabwe Olympic team visiting Lusaka for two warm-up matches and winning 4-3 and drawing 2-2 against a team that looked far from ready for battle against Egypt, Burkina Faso and Senegal. Dennis Lota scored in each match and has transferred to the national team his excellent form with South African club Orlando Pirates. He can operate as a striker or between midfield and attack. After announcing his retirement following a dismal Zambian showing at the 1998 finals, former African Footballer of the Year Kalusha Bwalya says he is prepared to compete one more time.
