DR CONGO

The Democratic republic of Congo were the surprise package of Burkina Faso ’98, knocking out Cameroon before taking South Africa to extra time in the semifinal. DRC have a long history in African football having already won the tournament in 1968 and 1974, as well as being Africa’s first World Cup finalist when the qualified in for the 1974 tournament in West Germany. They posses physically talented ball players, but the nation’s football has suffered from a lack of real resources made available to build the national team. Players to watch include former Kaizer Chiefs player Emeka Mamale and Free State Stars goalkeeper Michel Babale.
